Summer Workshops Week 6

Acting For the Camera – Intermediate/Advanced with Alex Murphy

*For actors with previous training/Intermediate-Advanced

This 5 day workshop is offered for actors to remind themselves, through exercises and filmed scene challenges daily, of the level of on-camera technique that a professional, experienced film actor lives by. We’ll spend the 5 days working with devised improvisations for camera, challenging exercises, short scenes and monologues shoots.

This workshop offers perspective and active, “on point” practice to actors who want to sharpen the reflexes to meet the professional demands of “performing” on-camera. Actors concentrate on the soul of the performance first, and then, shot by shot, actors “adjust” and experiment.

Alex works steadily-shot by shot, conditioning actors to “personalise” the dialogue and the behavior, working always for precision, and then learning to stay relaxed take by take in front of the camera. Through trial and error, actors come to understand the unique power and particular demands of that camera lens. You learn by doing. All exercises have at their core a basis in the principles of Stanislavsky, Meisner technique, and Practical Aesthetics. Each Actor will work on camera each and every day. Improvised and scripted scenes are used to put the on-camera techniques to work, monologues will be filmed for audition submission level. Actor’s bring their own one-minute monologues(2). Mentor -Alex Murphy – will email scenes to actors well ahead of the 1st workshop meeting.
