Voice and Speech

VOICE & SPEECH
Voice work can be developed, but it takes time.
The sooner you begin, the sooner it will pay off.
I find it amazing how actors can learn whole chunks of text and then, when they deliver them, cannot be either heard or understood!!!
You either speak too fast, too slow, too nasal, too creaky, too breathy, can’t breathe, run out of breath, too much breath, noisy breath
IF this happens to you sign up for this.
Over the course of 10 weeks this holistic approach
introduces you to the uniqueness that is your voice.
First section:
We open our sessions by warming up with sticks.
This brings quiet and embodies your approach to the words.
Then we use the scientific method of phonemics,
to explore how you shape and make your English sounds.
No thinking involved, just exploring by doing.
Second section:
We introduce and explore the role of emotions in vocal work.
This additional exploration will ground and connect you to your words
You will need a monologue of 1:30 – 2:30 mins in length to work on.
(not a dialogue chopped up, not a song lyric or poem: a monologue).
Let’s face it you could just program an AI voice to do all the things you cannot;
except you are human and you god given right is to inhabit your body and vocal capabilities.
For these reasons above and below, do your voice a favour and sign up!
People take voice classes for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common include:
- Singing improvement – To develop vocal technique, range, tone, and control for solo or group singing.
- Public speaking skills – To gain confidence, projection, clarity, and presence when speaking in front of others.
- Theater or acting training – To work on character voices, emotional expression, and vocal endurance for stage or screen roles.
- Accent reduction or modification – To improve intelligibility or adapt to a specific dialect (often for professional or social reasons).
- Voiceover work – To prepare for roles in animation, audiobooks, commercials, or narration.
- Professional communication – For careers in law, teaching, sales, or leadership roles that require strong, clear verbal communication.
- Health and vocal therapy – To address vocal strain, recover from injury, or build healthy voice habits.
- Personal growth or hobby – Simply for enjoyment, creativity, or to overcome shyness.

He acts in theatres, on location, for seminars, through role-play, at readings, upon diverse comedy podia and gives Sonnet workshops. Sutton’s acting career started in 1988 when he gained Dutch National press reviews after joining the Stalhouderij Theatre Company. Sutton’s first comedy show was in 1995 and has over 400 shows to his credit. He rose quickly to the rank of M.C. or Compere at the ‘newly opened’ Comedy Café in Amsterdam and was instrumental in the proliferation of this dubious artform.
