SUMMER WORKSHOPS 2023

Summer Workshops Week 3

Acting For the Camera – Intermediate, with Alex Murphy

Acting-for-the-Camera-Summer-2023

*For actors with some previous training.

In todays film world, you never want to be caught “acting.” The goal, always, when the camera rolls: you must get an audience to believe “you are who you say you are.”

Our five days together will take, as its primary goal, the great and perhaps the most useful notion in “on-camera” work: of building a “new version of me” for each and every second that the camera rolls. “Personalization” of any and all role playing on-camera is the technique notion of our time, and we will go after that. It is the demand made by all the best film work today.

The “personalization” goal will be the backdrop for our exercises over the first 4 days. Additionally, there will be monologue assignments and presentation, scene work, structured improvisations for camera, and technique specific exercises to advance the student’s working knowledge of technical requirements of acting for the camera. We will exercise as many challenging shot set-ups as possible for the actor to test themselves.
Some rehearsals in the off hours needed, as you’ll shoot two mono-logues, and we’ll shoot at least 2 short scenes which will be assigned and emailed before the workshop begins. Actors choose their own 1 minute monologues. We’ll also be shooting some structured improvisations.

“… the goal of the film actor is NOT to create a performance at all, but rather a reality to be recorded and shaped…” – Robert Benedetti.
