Meisner Technique – an Introduction

with Alex Murphy.

an Introduction

Meisner Technique for actors is quickly becoming a centerpiece for all serious training programs in the US and Europe. The technique is on fire..from London to Prague to Helsinki to Amsterdam, it is becoming essential study for actors. Many of the most well known actors working today have Meisner training on their resume.

“The truth of ourselves is the root of our acting.”  -Sanford Meisner

This class will use the “repetition exercises” set out by Sanford Meisner and the late William Esper, arguably the finest teacher ever of Meisner’s technique. In addition to “repetition” exercises, there will be an introduction to the practice of the “independent activity/knock-knock” improvisations, Meisner’s “Preparation” technique for the actor, and then, always, “relationship” work.  All actors will be assigned a scene partner and a final scene to prepare for a final presentation-with an emphasis on text from contemporary, world class writers in english. Actors will be urged to do some rehearsals with partners in the off hours.

“It’s much more important that the actor have an understanding heart, an ability to empathize with other human beings, an ability to respond with his feelings, and not with his head. That’s what makes an actor.” –William Esper.

Meisner Technique – Advanced

with Alex Murphy.

This class is sold out

Meisner Technique is now gaining a solid and unstoppable foothold into many of the best European actor training centers. Film directors across the international market are recognizing Meisner technique as the most valuable training edge an actor can get.

In this Advanced workshop you will revisit and drill the core Meisner repetition exercises in the first few weeks. Very quickly, students will take on the dynamics of the “knock at the door”/ independent activity” repetition-improvisations. For several weeks, with these signature exercises we begin locking in the notions of “living truthfully” moment by moment, and then deepening the repetition technique to begin applying it to complex “given circumstances.”

We also move to fully applying the Meisner to carefully chosen written text. Also, layered in carefully to the exercise rotation, we will counterbalance the Meisner repetition work with acting technique exercises that begin to address the actor’s responsibility to interpret the “original intention” of the text – and these exercises based in classic Stanislavski, Stella Adler, and Practical Aesthetics technique, addressing script analysis and essential character development.

Each actor will be assigned a scene and a partner and will be expected to work the repetition exercises and rehearse their scene material outside of class hours. At the end of our sessions, we will conduct a live presentation of the scenes that have been assigned for an invited audience.

*Actors must have had an introductory Meisner class for admittance to this class. Please submit a letter of intent and actor experience via email.

“You’re always playing yourself. It’s all autobiography, whatever you’re doing. It’s using them as a kind of prism through which to throw something real about yourself, or something relaxed at least. Because the last thing you want is to look like you’re acting.” Tilda Swinton
