“As soon as you have made a thought, laugh at it.” ― Lao Tzu
In addition to experimentation with pure, classic comedic techniques, weekly the you’ll drill with improvisation in the great Second City Improvisation tradition. And you’ll experiment with some stand-up comedy, writing and presenting original material. There will be weekly warm up exercises, and you’ll physicalize working basic and moderately challenging Stage Combat exercises- inching weekly towards choreographed devised combat-centric sketch routines for performance.
The class is also a chance to experiment with a comedic grasp of character, situation, and comic timing. Actors will workout with exercises that explore and experiment with comedic technique in a variety of genres. All work is supported with the universal rules of improvisation, learning to “think funny,” and then rehearsal and performance with a selection of comedic text.
Scenes and monologues will be assigned to all actors early in the cycle and then performed for an invited audience at the end of the class cycle.
“Life doesn’t make any sense, and we all pretend it does. Comedy’s job is to point out that it doesn’t make sense, and that it doesn’t make much difference anyway.” ― Eric Idle.
